The House of Performing Arts is not just a performance venue; it will also act as an incubator for local talent. By offering training, workshops, and educational opportunities, HoPA will contribute to the development of aspiring artists, positioning Abu Dhabi as a key destination for artistic growth and innovation. This multifunctional space will support cultural exchange and foster a strong sense of unity through shared experiences in the arts.

Culture as a Connector

Snøhetta’s design philosophy for HoPA reimagines the relationship between the public and performing arts buildings. Traditionally seen as exclusive spaces, HoPA will break down barriers by becoming accessible to everyone, regardless of whether a performance is happening. It will foster a sense of community ownership, offering open and inviting spaces where the public can gather, socialize, and participate in cultural events at all times.

The building is based on several core principles:

  • Culture as a Connector – HoPA will bridge cultural divides, connecting people through the shared language of the performing arts.
  • Abu Dhabi Incubator – HoPA will serve as a nurturing ground for Emirati artistic traditions and a platform for emerging talent.
  • Accessible Public Spaces – The design will ensure that public spaces within HoPA are welcoming and inclusive, with ease of access for all.
  • Über-Flexible Performance Spaces – The performance venues will adapt to a variety of events, from orchestras to theatre and opera, ensuring a tailored experience for each production.
  • Sustainability – Both social and environmental sustainability will be key drivers in the design, with HoPA enriching the cultural life of Abu Dhabi while being an environmentally responsible structure.
  • Incubating Artistic Growth

HoPA will act as a cultural incubator by offering physical spaces for artists to rehearse, create, and perform. The facility will feature rehearsal rooms, performance venues, and technical support to help local artists hone their skills. It will also foster a vibrant community of creative individuals by hosting workshops, masterclasses, and collaborative events. This exchange of ideas will generate fresh approaches to artistic expression, contributing to Abu Dhabi’s growing cultural identity.

Accessibility and Connectivity

A key aspect of HoPA’s design is its accessibility. The public will move comfortably under the shaded roof and enjoy easy access to the building 24/7. Located in proximity to public transport, including proposed light rail and boat taxis, HoPA will connect seamlessly with the surrounding infrastructure. The building will also prioritize pedestrian-friendly streets, bike lanes, and access for people with mobility challenges, ensuring that everyone in the community can enjoy the arts.

Über-Flexible Performance Spaces

The heart of HoPA is its über-flexible auditorium, designed to host a wide range of performances. Its acoustics can be fine-tuned for different types of events, while the seating arrangement can be adjusted with retractable and modular seating systems to accommodate various audience sizes. The adaptable stage design will allow for different configurations, whether for orchestral, opera, or theatrical performances. Additionally, a flexible lighting system and backstage facilities will be customizable to meet the needs of each performance, ensuring a world-class experience for both artists and audiences.

HoPA is designed to be more than just a venue—it will be a platform for cultural exchange, a hub for creativity, and a welcoming space for the entire community. Through its flexibility, accessibility, and commitment to nurturing local talent, Snøhetta’s House of Performing Arts will play a vital role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s cultural future.
