Challenging conventional practices has become paramount in today’s industry. Examining the construction sector, concrete stands as the predominant material, relying heavily on cement, which accounts for approximately 8% of global human-made CO2 emissions. As a response to this, Snøhetta collaborated with the founders of Cemonite in a material research project that explored new ways to innovate within the construction industry—utilizing industrial by-products to produce a novel type of geopolymer concrete, aiming to cut the carbon footprint associated with traditional concrete production by up to 70%. This groundbreaking work led to the founding of Cemonite, a startup with a bold and pioneering vision.

Today, this innovative approach has proven its value, resulting in the growth of Cemonite, now employing 20 people and opening its first factory.

3 The Construction Material of the Future

Globally industrial processes generate vast amounts of various residues with untapped potential. Cemonite's patented technology gives new value to these unutilized by-products. The idea is to develop low CO2 emission concrete as an alternative to the established Portland-based concrete, which is currently the most widely used building material in the world. This multiplex solution is based on on-site production, eliminating both transport emissions and time.
