Cairo Expo City is a project for a multiuse complex with trade fair expo halls as the core program. The competition was organized by the Egyptian state agency GOIFF in 2009. Snøhetta finished in
second place with this submission.
Programmatically the project consists of 2 hotel towers, a shopping center, a large conference hall and 100.000m2 of expo halls. The architectural concept draws on references to the Nile valley, utilizing the built volumes to create a green and blue park open to the public.
Thus, on this vast site located in the heart of the city, the harsh reality of Cairo’s urbanity is mirrored in the crisp exterior perimeter and contrasted by the soft flowing natural forms traversing the interior of the site. All the components of the expo center are organized along this man-made valley that flows across the site, linking it to the neighboring convention center.
