Beijing Library wins Design for Asia Grand Award 2024
We are pleased to announce that Beijing Library designed by Snøhetta has won Design for Asia Grand Award 2024.
Completed and opened in 2023, Beijing Library embodies a transformative vision for libraries, reinstating its relevance in the digital age and placing the cultivation of human connections at its forefront. As a key cultural landmark in Beijing's newly established sub-center Tongzhou, the library stands as a contemporary hub for learning, knowledge-sharing, social interaction, and community engagement.
The central open area is sculpted as an interior landform with terraced hills under a vast ginkgo canopy. The terraced landscape and tree-like columns invite visitors to lift their gaze, embracing the expansive view before them. Below the ginkgo canopy, the eye is drawn to the valley of books unfurling into the vast landscape beyond.
In 2003, Hong Kong Design Center launched the Design for Asia (DFA) Awards to underpin the role of designers in society, and to celebrate design leadership and exemplary designs and projects with impact in Asia. The awards are presented to the design solutions which have been deemed exemplars for improving the quality of life, and inspiring the future design development.
