550 Madison receives AIA New York Design Award

Jan 10, 2023

Citation Award given for "achieving a new level of expression for public space"

The American Institute of Architects New York chapter (AIA NY) has awarded Snøhetta's 550 Madison Garden with a Design Award in the Urban Design category. The 550 Madison Garden re-envisions a previously underutilized public space as a generously expanded, densely vegetated garden. As a vibrant sensory retreat, the transformation of the existing Privately-Owned Public Space (POPS) draws upon the architectural heritage, the activity of the neighborhood, and the natural history of the region, offering the only publicly-accessible vegetated open space in the East Midtown District.

The AIA NY Citation was awarded due to the project's ability to achieve "a new level of expression for public space." For the project, Snøhetta served as Design Architect and Landscape Architect with Adamson Associates as Architect of Record, and SiteWorks as Landscape Architect of Record.
