Powerhouse Drøbak Montessori is a secondary school with 60 students from 8th through 10th grade. The school is located in the beautiful surroundings high above the fjord northeast of the center of Drøbak in Norway.
The new school is designed to strengthen the connection between people and nature. Over its lifetime, the school will also produce more energy than it consumes, producing close to 30 500 kWh energy annually through solar power.
“The design is rooted in the energy concept, the site and project characteristics, and the Montessori school’s philosophy. The architecture is thought as a social and pedagogical tool, built up around the Powerhouse concept as a core element”, says Kjetil T. Thorsen, Snøhetta.
“Our vision, learning through experience, is emphasized through student activities and interdisciplinarity. We believe the building will facilitate for an increased understanding, curiosity and respect for nature. We look forward to moving into Norway’s most environmentally friendly school”, says Marvi Flugsrud, Drøbak Montessori Stiftelse.
