Open seminar: Proposals for the new National Memorial for 22 July
On Thursday, 6 June, Snøhetta's artist Jorunn Sannes and architect Kjetil Trædal Thorsen will be one of ten teams presenting their ideas for a new national memorial site in Oslo in commemoration of the terror attacks of 22 July 2011.
The memorial will be established in connection with the new government quarter in central Oslo. KORO, Norway's national body responsible for curating, producing, and activating art in public space, has been commissioned to lead the first phase of the work.
After an open pre-qualification with 220 applicants, ten groups of artists and architects were invited to design sketch proposals for the memorial site.
As part of the process, the proposals will be presented at a seminar at the National Museum on 6 June from 9.00 to 16.00. The seminar is open for all and will be streamed on koro.no
The ten participating teams are:
- Anna Daniell
- A K Dolven and Cathrine Vigander
- Beate Hølmebakk and Per Tamsen
- Henning Sunde, Hanne Tyrmi and Rainer Stange
- Kjetil Trædal Thorsen and Jorunn Sannes
- Marianne Heier
- Matias Faldbakken
- Merete Røstad and Jad El Khoury
- Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta (Raqs Media Collective)
- Sumayya Vally and Suzanne Lacy
The jury will assess the proposals during the summer, and in September, three teams will be invited to further develop and detail their projects before a winning proposal is announced in March 2025.
Artist Sandra Mujinga was originally part of Jorunn Sannes and Kjetil Trædal Thorsen's team but has withdrawn from the competition as of May 2024 due to lack of availability.
