VM Pavilion

VM Pavilion

The VM Pavilion is the public face of the organizers of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011, housing the information office for OSLO 2011.  It  was designed to combine Norwegian traditions and modern design. The permanent features of the square where it sits have been incorporated into the design of the pavilion to highlight the qualities of the site.

The pavilion is a neat, temporary building consisting of three parts: two rectangular blocks linked by an open, curved facade. The design aimed to define the place, by having the pavilion open up onto an inner area, creating an intimate arena around the statue of King Haakon. Environmental considerations have been a priority in every aspect of the project. It is easy to assemble and dismantle, and is built out of solid wood provided by Moelven, with a warm oak finish.

The pavilion has been tailored to its position in the upper corner of 7 juni plassen in central Oslo. It is adapted to the existing lines, thoroughfares and views to the old fortress Akershus festning and City Hall at Rådhusplassen.

The light slots in the facades facing Henrik Ibsens Gate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made out of Plexiglas and fiber-optics, have been inspired by features in the surrounding landscape and icicles.

The furniture company Montana Møbler and lighting company Flos Belysning have sponsored the building with their products. Artistic decoration by Malene Landgreen.

The main body of the building opens up onto an inner courtyard with full-height glass facades.

The pavilion is made up of modules, making it easy to dismantle after the WSC 2011. The building parts can be set up separately or together elsewhere and can easily be adapted to serve many different purposes, such as offices, holiday home, studio, etc. The lift is also fully recyclable for use in another building.
